What is liposuction?

A cannula (tube) is inserted thru a very small incision to suction the fat. The cannula is pushed then pulled through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and vacuuming them out. The suction action is provided a vacuum pump or a large syringe, depending on the surgeon's preference. 282,876 people underwent liposuction surgery in 2002 making liposuction the second most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedure.

Is liposuction right for me?

Check with a board certified plastic surgeon to see if you are a candidate for liposuction. The best patients for liposuction are of normal-weight with firm, elastic skin that have excess fat in particular regions.

How do I obtain the best results?

Liposuction is no different than any other plastic surgery procedure in that the key to a good outcome is to find the right plastic surgeon to perform your procedure. Please see our plastic surgeon directory for referrals and research your plastic surgeon.

Are certain people at additional risk?

Yes, if you have diabetes, major heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or recently had surgery near the area to be liposuctioned.

What if I catch a cold or other infection?

Call your surgeon, he or she may want you to reschedule.
